Irma Welgrin, 88, of St. Louis Park, Minn., former longtime resident of Duluth, died suddenly Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, as a result of a car accident.

 

She was born July 29, 1911, in Katowicz, Poland. Irma survived many hardships in life, including loss of family in World War II and three years in a German forced labor camp. Irma and her husband for many years owned and operated Joe's Fine Tailoring in the West End.

 

She was preceded in death by Joe, her husband of 50 years.

 

Irma is survived by her daughter, Beate (Howard) Kampf of Minneapolis; and grandchildren Elissa, Jacob and Hannah.

 

Graveside service: 4 p.m. today in Adas Israel Cemetery. Arrangement by Johnson Mortuary.

Deceased Name: Joe Welgrin

Joe Welgrin, 88, Duluth, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 1996, in St. Luke's Hospice.

 

He was born in Dabrowa-Gornicza, Poland, on Aug. 27, 1908, one of seven brothers and one sister. He was a tailor. Before World War II, he owned a custom-made clothing store and factory. From his original family, only he and two nieces, now living in Australia and Israel, survived the Holocaust. Beginning in 1943, he was transported to five concentration camps. He was liberated by U.S. Army troops when they entered Buchenwald on April 11, 1945. He immigrated to the United States and settled in Duluth in 1952.

 

He worked as a tailor for Oreck's, Foreman and Clark, Columbia Clothing and Pat the Tailor. He operated Welgrin's Tailor Shop in the West End until his retirement in 1971. He lectured to students at UMD and UWS during Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies. He was a loving father and grandfather, and was a dear friend to the many that knew him.

 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irma; a daughter, Beate (Mrs. Howard) Kampf of Golden Valley, Minn.; three grandchildren, Ellissa of Las Vegas, Nev., Hannah of Lawrence, Kan., and Jacob of Golden Valley.

 

He was a lifelong member of Adas Israel Synagogue and the Jewish Fellowship Club.

 

Graveside services: 3:30 p.m. today at Adas Israel Cemetery. Shiva services, Monday only, at Adas Israel Synagogue at 5:45 p.m. Memorials to the American Heart Association would be appreciated. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
